The transition to being a stay-at-home teacher to your own children can be a difficult one. Just ask any mom or dad doing it right now.

I am not a trained teacher but I have assumed the role due to the Coronovirus pandemic. I am spending quality time with my child while learning my child’s strengths and weaknesses. I have never been this aware of exactly what my child is being taught and how it is explained to him.

I am also dealing with distractions in the home, seemingly strategic bathroom breaks, meltdowns, technical issues, and resistance to extra practice in areas where my son needs it the most.

At times I feel like I need to be a psychologist or at least think like one. How do I get my son to do what he doesn’t want to do? How do I encourage him when he is frustrated and making silly mistakes? At what point have we done enough math even though we have not finished the page?

I am reviewing information I have not seen in over 30 years! Luckily, I am in a district that is using quality online learning programs that are easy to use and explain the lessons well. I also am blessed with a virtual counselor from the school who is on top of our progress and also responds in breakneck speed to any problem we may encounter.
