Putting Nature in Our Hearts
Returning land to nature so that we can coexist with it is a central theme in the new film on Netflix, David Attenborough: A Life on this Planet. As scientists continue to warn of catastrophic consequences of rising global temperatures by the year 2050, if significant changes are not made, this film explores the contributing factors behind the warming of the Earth.
Yes, we know that fossil fuels are a major contributing factor in climate change. But increases in human population and the destruction of rain forests (described as the lungs of the Earth) for production of food are also important factors.
Rethinking what we eat is one solution. Eating a mostly plant-based diet would considerably help but only if we look at how we grow those plants. We need to rethink farming.
The key to many of the contributing factors of climate change is innovation. Farming is no exception. The film highlights new farming techniques being used in the Netherlands. They involve family owned, indoor greenhouses that produce a higher year round yield and use significantly less fertilizer, pesticides, water and land. The Netherlands is the second leading exporter of food in the world.
